The high priest’s family
Caiaphas, the high priest who handed Jesus over to Pilate, is named in the Gospels and by Josephus, a Jewish historian of the first century whose histories of his people are among our richest sources for the period. In 1990, construction workers south of Jerusalem broke into a family tomb. Inside lay an ornately carved limestone box made to hold bones, inscribed with the name “Joseph son of Caiaphas.” Many scholars believe it held the bones of the very man named in the Gospels.
