The faith of the next generation
On his way to martyrdom in Rome around AD 110, Ignatius, bishop of Antioch (then a great city of Roman Syria, in what is now southern Turkey), wrote to the church at Smyrna. Against those who said Christ only seemed to suffer, he insisted that Jesus was truly born, truly nailed to the cross under Pilate and Herod, and truly raised. These are the convictions of the generation that followed the apostles.
being fully persuaded with respect to our Lord, that He was truly of the seed of David according to the flesh, and the Son of God according to the will and power of God; that He was truly born of a virgin, was baptized by John, in order that all righteousness might be fulfilled by Him; and was truly, under Pontius Pilate and Herod the tetrarch, nailed [to the cross] for us in His flesh.
