Tatian, who called himself an ‘Assyrian’, studied under Justin Martyr in Rome and wrote an Oration to the Greeks attacking Greek culture. After Justin’s death he returned east and was later accused of founding the ascetic Encratite movement.
About 170 he combined the four Gospels into a single narrative, the Diatessaron. No copy of the original survives, and scholars debate whether he wrote it in Greek or Syriac, but it served as the standard Gospel text of Syriac-speaking churches for two centuries.
