Capital of the kingdom of Commagene on the Euphrates, annexed by Rome in AD 72–73. It was the birthplace of the satirist Lucian, and the Syriac letter of Mara bar Serapion appears to come from a citizen of the city carried off after the annexation. The ancient site now lies under the Atatürk Dam reservoir.
