A small Aegean island off the coast of Asia Minor. The author of Revelation, a prophet named John, says he was on Patmos ‘because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus’ when he received his visions, usually dated around AD 95. Tradition names the cave where he saw them.

    John of Patmos

    A prophetic vision written by John on Patmos to seven churches in Asia, dated by Irenaeus to the end of Domitian’s reign, c. AD 95. It presents Jesus as “the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead” and the Lamb who was slain.
