About this place

A provincial town whose ancient rubbish mounds, excavated from 1896, yielded hundreds of thousands of papyrus fragments. Among them are Greek fragments of the Gospel of Thomas, of the Gospel of Mary and of canonical Gospels, and the sayings papyrus P.Oxy. 5575, published in 2023.
