A small Jewish village in the hills of Lower Galilee, a few kilometres from the city of Sepphoris. Jesus grew up here and was known as ‘the Nazarene’. Excavations have found first-century houses, tombs and agricultural installations.
The ‘Nazareth inscription’, an imperial edict against tomb violation, was sent to Paris from Nazareth in 1878, but its findspot is unknown, and a 2020 isotope analysis of the marble suggests that the stone came from the island of Kos rather than from Galilee.
