The oasis city, earlier called Yathrib, to which Muhammad and his followers emigrated in 622. Islamic tradition places Surahs 3, 4 and 5 in the Medinan period, including the passages on Mary’s family, Jesus’s miracles and the statement that he was not crucified (4:157).
