About this place

Lugdunum, the chief city of Roman Gaul. Its Christian community, with that of nearby Vienne, suffered a violent persecution in 177, described in a letter preserved by Eusebius. Irenaeus, a native of Asia Minor, became its bishop afterwards and wrote Against Heresies here around 180.
