Antipas, a son of Herod the Great, ruled Galilee and Peraea as tetrarch from 4 BC to AD 39, so Jesus’s Galilean ministry took place in his territory. He built Tiberias on the Sea of Galilee and rebuilt Sepphoris near Nazareth. Caligula exiled him to Gaul in 39.
Both Josephus and the Gospels say he had John the Baptist executed; Josephus gives political fear as the reason, the Gospels John’s criticism of his marriage to Herodias. Luke alone says Pilate sent Jesus to him during the trial; the Gospel of Peter makes ‘Herod the king’ order the crucifixion, and Ignatius speaks of Jesus nailed ‘under Pontius Pilate and Herod the tetrarch’.
