About this place

The village where, in Luke 24, two disciples recognise the risen Jesus in the breaking of bread. Several sites have been proposed. The coordinates mark Emmaus Nicopolis near Latrun, which lies further from Jerusalem than Luke’s sixty stadia but is the site favoured by ancient tradition.

Emmaus Nicopolis was also the home of the Christian chronographer Julius Africanus, who led an embassy to the emperor on the town’s behalf and who, in his Chronography, preserved the reports of Thallus and Phlegon about the darkness at the crucifixion.
