Capital of the small kingdom of Osrhoene in upper Mesopotamia and an early centre of Syriac-speaking Christianity. Eusebius reports a correspondence between Jesus and King Abgar of Edessa, found in the city’s archives; the letters are legendary but show the city’s claim to an apostolic founding, which tradition linked with Thomas and Thaddaeus (Addai).
