About this place

A Roman frontier city on the Euphrates, abandoned after the Sasanian Persians captured it around AD 256. Excavations in the 1920s and 1930s found a house adapted for Christian worship, with a baptistery painted with the good shepherd, healing scenes and the women at the tomb, among the earliest surviving Christian images. The paintings are now at Yale.
