A fishing village on the north-west shore of the Sea of Galilee, which Mark presents as the base of Jesus’s Galilean ministry and the home of Peter. Excavations have uncovered a fourth- or fifth-century synagogue over earlier foundations and a house venerated from early times as Peter’s, later enclosed by an octagonal church.
