A small town south of Jerusalem, remembered as the home of David. Matthew and Luke both place Jesus’s birth here, though by different routes, and Justin Martyr and the Infancy Gospel of James locate it in a cave. Many historians think the tradition may be theological, linking Jesus with David, and that Nazareth was his birthplace; others accept it.
