A port city on the Black Sea coast of the Roman province of Bithynia and Pontus. Pliny the Younger governed the province around 110–112 and wrote to Trajan about Amastris. Where he wrote Letter 10.96 on the Christians is not stated; its position in the collection suggests his tour of the Pontic coast, and Amastris is one scholarly guess.
